Oral Care: The Basics

Taking care of your oral health is essential to maintaining your overall health and wellness. Luckily, the basics of good oral care are relatively simple and straightforward.

Here’s an overview of the core steps you should be taking every day (and night!) to keep your smile looking and feeling great:

Brush your Teeth

Brushing your teeth twice a day prevents plaque buildup and reduces the risk of developing cavities and gum disease. It’s best to brush your teeth in the morning when you wake up and at night before going to bed. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle and brush all major surfaces of the teeth and along the gum line. Make sure to brush the inner surfaces of your teeth as well!

Floss your Teeth

Flossing does the work that your toothbrush can’t. It removes plaque and food particles from between the teeth and under the gumline, which helps reduce your risk of cavities and gingivitis. Floss your teeth at least once a day — ideally before bedtime!

Use Mouthwash

Mouthwash serves a few important purposes. It helps reduce bacteria in the mouth, freshens breath, and helps protect against gingivitis. Most mouthwashes are alcohol-based and can dry out your mouth, which can further contribute to dental plaque buildup and bad breath. Be sure to rinse your mouth with water after using mouthwash.

Go to Regular Checkups

It’s important to go to a dentist for regular checkups and cleanings. Your dentist can identify any potential problems with your oral health and provide preventative measures. It’s recommended that you visit the dentist twice a year.

Some Other Oral Care Tips

  • Don’t smoke or use tobacco products, as they can stain and damage teeth.
  • Limit your consumption of sugary foods and drinks, as they can contribute to tooth decay.
  • Choose food and drinks that are low in acid, as they can harm your tooth enamel.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day.
  • Chew sugarless gum after a meal to help increase saliva production.
