Malodorous flatulence

Malodorous Flatulence

Flatulence, or farting, is a normal, healthy bodily function. Although those who pass gas may sometimes feel embarrassed, passing gas around 14 times a day is normal and natural, as everyone does it. However, flatulence can have an unpleasant odor or be loud, which can be embarrassing.

Malodorous flatulence is flatulence that smells foul and is often caused by certain foods in a person’s diet. It can occur during digestion and absent mindedness, when the food particles do not get digested properly in the lower intestine, releasing foul odors.

Signs and symptoms of malodorous flatulence
  • Foul smelling gas
  • The gas volume may be higher than normal
  • Flatulence may also cause abdominal cramps
  • Feeling of fullness or bloating
Foods that can cause malodorous flatulence

Foods that contain sulfur and foods that are not easily digested are often causes of malodorous flatulence. Some of the foods that can cause foul-smelling gas are:

  • Red meat
  • Eggs
  • Legumes such as beans, lentils, and peas
  • Cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli and cauliflower
  • Dairy products
  • Onions
  • Garlic
  • Alcohol
  • Artificial sweeteners

In some cases, if the gases released are very foul-smelling, they may indicate a health issue, such as lactose intolerance or digestive illnesses.

Treating malodorous flatulence

Eliminating certain foods and drinks from the diet can help reduce foul-smelling gas. Eating smaller meals, watching the amount of fiber in the diet, and drinking enough water can also help. Some individuals may also need to supplement their diet with probiotics or digestive enzymes to help with digestion.

It is also important to try to practice healthy lifestyle behaviors, such as getting enough exercise, drinking enough water, and getting enough sleep. Making these changes can help reduce malodorous flatulence.
