Intestinal Amebiasis

What is Intestinal Amebiasis?

Intestinal amebiasis is a parasitic infection of the large intestine caused by a single-celled organism known as Entamoeba histolytica. It is also known as amoebic dysentery or amoebiasis and is one of the most common parasitic infections worldwide. It is transmitted through contact with contaminated food & water, as well as through person-to-person contact.

Symptoms of Intestinal Amebiasis

The symptoms of amebiasis may vary from person to person, but may include:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Diarrhea, which may be accompanied by blood or mucus
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Fever
  • Malaise and fatigue

Diagnosis

The diagnosis of intestinal amebiasis is usually made on the basis of a physical exam and medical history. Diagnostic tests might include:

  • Stool tests – A microscopic exam of the patient's stool can detect the presence of amoeba cysts.
  • Blood tests – A blood test can determine if the patient has antibodies to the amoeba.
  • Imaging tests – A CT scan or MRI can help doctors to see any other related problems, such as abscesses.

Treatment

The treatment for amebiasis depends on the severity of the infection and may include:

  • Antibiotics – Antibiotics such as metronidazole and tinidazole can be used to eradicate the amoeba.
  • Surgery – In some cases, surgery may be needed if the amoeba has caused an abscess or other serious damage.
  • Parasiticides – Parasiticides are drugs that kill the amoeba. These can be taken orally or applied topically.
