Cognitive Dysfunctions

What is Cognitive Dysfunction?

Cognitive Dysfunction is an impairment of mental functioning. It can manifest itself in any number of ways, such as difficulty concentrating, memory problems, difficulty organizing thoughts and materials, difficulty with communication, difficulty with abstract thinking, difficulty with problem solving and decision-making, and more. Cognitive dysfunction often occurs when the brain is under excessive stress or trauma, but can also be caused by physical conditions, such as tumors, nerve damage, degenerative diseases, and stroke.

Symptoms of Cognitive Dysfunction

The most common symptoms of cognitive dysfunction include difficulty concentrating, slowed reaction time, difficulty retaining information, difficulty organizing thoughts and materials, difficulty with communication, difficulty with abstract thinking, difficulty with problem-solving and decision-making, and more. Other possible symptoms may include depression and anxiety, difficulty multitasking, impaired motor coordination, difficulty expressing oneself, poor judgment, and loss of initiative.

Treatment of Cognitive Dysfunction

The treatment of cognitive dysfunction depends on the underlying cause. If a physical condition is the cause, then treating the condition can sometimes improve cognitive functioning. If the cause is psychological, then psychotherapy or counseling may be recommended. If the cause is medication-related, then the doctor may recommend alternative medications or suggest a change in dosage. In addition, lifestyle modifications, such as exercising, getting sufficient rest, and eating a healthy diet, can help improve cognitive functioning.
