Allergic Rhinitis (AR)

Allergic Rhinitis (AR) - An Overview

Allergic rhinitis (AR), commonly referred to as hay fever, is an inflammation of the nasal passages caused by an allergen, such as pollen, dust mites, animal dander, and mold. It results in powerful, yet temporary, sneezing and congestion that can lead to loss of smell and headaches.

Signs and Symptoms of Allergic Rhinitis

The most common signs and symptoms of allergic rhinitis include:

  • Itchy eyes
  • Sneezing
  • Nasal congestion
  • Facial pain
  • Watery nasal discharge
  • Coughing and wheezing

In some cases, these symptoms can also cause headaches, loss of smell, and irritated skin. Certain triggers, such as pet dander or pollen, can cause more severe reactions, such as hives or swelling of the eyes.

Treating Allergic Rhinitis

Since allergic rhinitis is an allergy-related condition, the best way to treat it is to avoid exposure to the allergen that is triggering your symptoms. If avoidance strategies are not successful, medications such as antihistamines, nasal steroids, or decongestants can be taken. Allergy immunotherapy, commonly known as allergy shots, may also be considered.
