Luteinizing hormone (LH) blood test

What is a Luteinizing Hormone (LH) Blood Test?

A Luteinizing Hormone (LH) blood test is a type of medical laboratory test used to measure the amount of luteinizing hormone (LH) in a person’s blood. LH is a hormone that is released by the pituitary gland and plays an important role in regulating a number of reproductive and hormonal processes in the body.

Preparation

No special preparation is needed. However, because physical activity and stress may affect test results, you should not engage in strenuous physical activity for the 24 hours prior to the test.

Procedure

The procedure for the test is usually fairly straightforward and quick. It begins with the person lying down so that the clinician can find a vein in which to insert the needle for drawing a sample of blood. Once the sample has been taken, it will be sent to a lab for analysis.

Types

There are two primary types of LH tests:

  • Baseline LH Tests: These tests measure the amount of LH in the body in order to assess the function of the ovaries. This type of test is usually done on women who are trying to become pregnant.
  • Day 3 LH Tests: These tests measure the amount of LH in the body on the third day of one’s menstrual cycle to assess the level of estrogen and progesterone in the body. This type of test is usually done on women who are trying to determine the cause of infertility.

Risks

There are no risks associated with a LH Blood Test, as it is a simple and painless process. The only potential risk is that of bruising and/or infection at the site of the needle insertion.

Why is the Test Done?

The primary reasons why a LH test is done are to evaluate fertility in both men and women, to diagnose infertility, to identify the cause of irregular menstrual cycles, and to help diagnose certain types of reproductive-related diseases such as polycystic ovarian syndrome.

When is the Test Done?

The LH test can be done at any time; however, the timing of the test will depend on the reasons why it has been ordered. For example, if the LH test is being used to assess fertility, it will usually be done during the third day of the menstrual cycle. In the case of men, the test can be done at any time.

What Do the Results Mean?

The results of a LH test can help identify the cause of irregular menstrual cycles or infertility. A high level of LH may indicate polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). Low levels of LH may indicate a pituitary gland or hypothalamus disorder, or may be due to menopause. It is important to talk to your doctor about your test results and what they mean for your health.
