Tinea barbae

What is Tinea Barbae?

Tinea barbae is a fungal infection primarily found in men's faces and beards. It is a type of ringworm caused by a species of fungus called trichophyton. It affects the skin and hair around the lips, chin, and jawline and may spread further down the neck if left untreated. Symptoms include redness, itching, and burning of the affected area which can lead to some pain. Lesions can form which can be filled with pus and become crusted over, creating scabs.

How Common is Tinea Barbae?

Tinea barbae is not a very common condition and is usually found in adult males. It is more common in individuals who work outside in hot, humid conditions and those involved in manual labor or an agricultural occupation. People who have diabetes, HIV, skin allergies, or a weakened immune system are also more likely to develop this condition.

Causes of Tinea Barbae

Tinea barbae is caused by the fungus trichophyton, which is found on human skin, animals, and surfaces. It is contracted through direct skin-to-skin contact with an infected person or animal, contact with contaminated surfaces, or coming into contact with clothing, bedding, or other items. It is most commonly spread in damp environments such as locker rooms and swimming pools.

Symptoms of Tinea Barbae

The most common symptom of tinea barbae is an itchy, red rash in the beard area, often with an outer ring of scaly skin and a center of pus-filled lesions. Other symptoms may include:

  • Burning
  • Itching
  • Redness
  • Swollen skin
  • Painful or tender skin
  • Small bumps or blisters
  • Crusting or scaling of the skin
  • Hair loss or thinning

Diagnosis and Treatment of Tinea Barbae

Tinea barbae is diagnosed by a physical exam of the affected area and possibly a skin culture or fungal scraping. Treatment typically includes antifungal creams or ointments and may also include oral antifungal medications in more severe cases. It is important to keep the area clean and dry and avoid sharing personal items such as razors, towels, and clothing.
