Stress Ulcers

What are Stress Ulcers

Stress ulcers are small erosion wounds or sores on the lining of the stomach or upper part of the small intestine. These ulcers are caused by excessive acid production in the stomach, as well as psychological and physical stress. They typically form in response to a major physical or emotional event. People who suffer from stress ulcers may experience abdominal pain and weight loss.

What Causes Stress Ulcers

Stress ulcers are usually caused by an increased production of gastric acid and an overall increase in stomach pressure. Factors that may contribute to the development of stress ulcers include:

  • Severe physical trauma
  • Severe emotional distress
  • Surgery
  • Burns
  • Medication side effects
  • Infections
  • Deprivation of oxygen
  • Radiation treatment
  • Chemotherapy
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Diabetes

Individuals who suffer from chronic stress or those who are immunodeficient may also be more likely to develop stress ulcers.

Symptoms of Stress Ulcers

The symptoms of stress ulcers vary depending on the severity and location of the wound. The most common symptom is abdominal pain. Other common symptoms include nausea, vomiting, weight loss, and loss of appetite.

Treating Stress Ulcers

Stress ulcers are generally treated with medication that reduces the production of gastric acid. In some cases, antibiotics may be prescribed to help reduce stomach bacteria and prevent infection. Other medications may be prescribed to reduce the symptoms. Surgery may be necessary in more severe cases.

Preventing Stress Ulcers

To prevent the development of stress ulcers, it is important to reduce stress in your life. Regular exercise, adequate sleep, and relaxation techniques are all beneficial for reducing stress. It is also important to watch your diet and avoid smoking or excessive alcohol consumption. If you are taking medication, follow your doctor’s instructions carefully.
