Somatoform Disorders

Somatoform Disorders

Somatoform Disorders are a group of mental health disorders that are characterised by physical symptoms that cannot be explained by an underlying physical cause. The symptoms are involuntary and are usually distressing to the person experiencing them. This can result in considerable disability and distress. The cause of Somatoform Disorders is unknown but thought to be related to both psychological and biological factors.

The most common types of Somatoform Disorders are:

  • Conversion Disorder - Also referred to as ‘Functional Neurological Symptom Disorder’, this is caused by psychological distress converting into physical symptoms.
  • Hypochondriasis - This disorder causes severe distress due to an excessive and unfounded preoccupation with having a serious illness.
  • Somatization Disorder - This results in recurrent, multi-symptomatic complaints which cannot be explained by underlying medical conditions.

Treatment of Somatoform Disorders usually involves psychological approaches such as counselling, cognitive-behavioural therapies and psychoanalytic psychotherapy. Medications may also be used in some cases. The goal of treatment is to reduce the distress of the symptoms and improve the individual’s functioning in everyday life.

It is important to seek professional help if you think you, or someone you know, may be experiencing Somatoform Disorders. With the right care and support, it is possible to successfully manage the symptoms and live a full and meaningful life.
