Nausea and vomiting are symptoms of an underlying illness and can significantly affect quality of life. Severe nausea and vomiting is characterized by the frequent and intense urge to vomit, and can occur in medical conditions such as pregnancy, migraines, motion sickness, food poisoning, cancer treatments, and stomach virus.

Causes of Severe Nausea and Vomiting

Severe nausea and vomiting can be caused by a variety of conditions:

Treating Severe Nausea and Vomiting

The treatment of severe nausea and vomiting depends on the underlying cause. To ease nausea and vomiting:

  • Eat saltine crackers or other snacks before getting out of bed in the morning.
  • Sip on clear or ice-cold drinks, such as ginger ale or lemonade.
  • Drink plenty of fluids, such as water, apple juice, and sports drinks, to prevent dehydration.
  • Eat small, frequent meals.
  • Avoid greasy and fried foods.
  • Avoid acidic foods, such as citrus fruits and juices, coffee, and tomato products.
  • Get plenty of rest.
  • Try over-the-counter (OTC) medications such as pepto-bismol, or ginger capsules or ginger ale.
  • If the nausea is due to anxiety or stress, try relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing or yoga.
  • Consult your doctor if symptoms persist or worsen over time, as medical interventions may be necessary.
