Ovulatory Dysfunction

What is Ovulatory Dysfunction?

Ovulatory dysfunction is a condition that occurs when a woman’s ovaries don’t regularly release eggs, or the eggs don’t develop properly. This condition is also known as ovulation disorder, or anovulation. Ovulatory dysfunction is a leading cause of infertility in women. It’s important to understand the signs and symptoms of ovulatory dysfunction, as it can be an underlying factor in other diseases, such as endometriosis or polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).

Causes of Ovulatory Dysfunction

Ovulatory dysfunction can be caused by a number of different factors, including:

  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Thyroid disorders
  • Stress
  • Medications
  • Weight fluctuations
  • Infections
  • Endocrine disruptions
  • Chronic illnesses such as diabetes

Signs and Symptoms of Ovulatory Dysfunction

The most common symptom of ovulatory dysfunction is irregular menstrual cycles. Menstrual cycles may become longer or shorter than usual or may be more or less frequent. Other symptoms may include:

  • Acne
  • Abdominal bloating
  • Tender or swollen breasts
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Weight gain
  • Mood swings
  • Infertility
  • Insulin resistance
  • Hirsutism

Diagnosis & Treatment of Ovulatory Dysfunction

The diagnosis of ovulatory dysfunction typically begins with a physical exam and a review of your medical and reproductive history. Your doctor may order further testing to detect ovarian hormone levels and to evaluate the ovaries, uterus, and other reproductive organs. Treatment for ovulatory dysfunction depends on the underlying cause. Medical treatments may include lifestyle modifications such as exercise and diet, medications such as oral contraceptives, and surgery. Other treatments may include assisted reproductive technologies, such as in vitro fertilization (IVF).
