Kidney infection

What is Kidney Infection?

A kidney infection, also known as pyelonephritis, is a type of urinary tract infection (UTI) that is caused by bacteria that have traveled from the bladder. It is a serious condition and can be life-threatening if untreated. Symptoms of a kidney infection include abdominal pain, frequent and pain urination, and fever.

Causes of Kidney Infection

Kidney infection is usually caused by bacteria that originated in the bladder or urethra, then spread to the kidneys. This occurs when a person has a urinary tract infection (UTI) that is left untreated. Bacteria can also travel directly from the bloodstream to the kidneys.

Symptoms of Kidney Infection

The most common symptoms of kidney infection include:

  • Chills and fever
  • Pain in lower back or side
  • Pain or burning sensation during urination
  • Frequent urination
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Cloudy or bloody urine

Treatment for Kidney Infection

Kidney infections can be treated with antibiotics, usually as an oral or intravenous (IV) medication. In some cases, over-the-counter pain medications may be used to provide relief from pain or discomfort. The patient should be sure to complete the entire course of antibiotics, even if symptoms appear to be resolved. In some cases, if the infection is severe, hospitalization may be necessary.

Prevention of Kidney Infections

There are several steps that can be taken to prevent kidney infections. These include:

  • Drinking plenty of water to flush out bacteria.
  • Urinating after sexual intercourse.
  • Drinking unsweetened cranberry juice.
  • Avoiding perfumed soaps, douches and feminine sprays.
  • Wearing cotton underwear and loose-fitting clothing.
  • Avoiding excessive bubble baths.
