  • Blurry vision
  • Tears
  • Burning sensation
  • Discharge
  • Swelling of the eyelids
  • Crust formation on the eyelids

Causes of Eye and Eyelid Infections

Eye and eyelid infections can be caused by a variety of bacterial, viral or fungal organisms. Bacterial infections are more common, but viral and fungal infections can also occur. Eye infections can be caused by exposure to irritants such as dust, chlorine, or other chemicals. Eye infections can be caused by poor hygiene, extended contact lens wear, and poor contact lens care.

Treating Eye and Eyelid Infections

Eye and eyelid infections can be treated with antibiotics, antifungal medications, and other treatments depending on the type of infection. It is important to follow the doctor's instructions for using medications and to finish the course of antibiotics even if the symptoms subside. Eye lubrication drops or ointments may also be helpful in decreasing eye discomfort.

Preventing Eye and Eyelid Infections

Eye and eyelid infections can be prevented by practicing good hygiene and taking steps to protect the eyes from irritants. Proper contact lens care is important for preventing eye infections. Wearing protective eyewear when working with hazardous materials can also reduce the risk of eye infections. As with other infections, avoiding close contact with people with known eye infections can also help reduce the risk of infection.
