Acne

What is Acne?

Acne is a skin condition that occurs when your hair follicles become plugged with oil and dead skin cells. It often causes whiteheads, blackheads or pimples, and usually appears on the face, forehead, chest, upper back and shoulders.

Causes of Acne

The main cause of acne is an overproduction of oil from the sebaceous glands. Bacteria, genetics, and hormones can also play a role. Certain medications and cosmetics can even make acne worse.

Treatment for Acne

There are several treatments available for acne. Your doctor may recommend topical medications, such as benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, azelaic acid, and retinoids, which can help clear your skin. Antibiotics may also be prescribed to fight the bacteria that can cause acne. In more serious cases, laser and light treatments, or even surgery, may be necessary.

How to Prevent Acne

You can reduce your risk of developing acne by following some simple skin care tips. These include:

  • Wash your face twice a day with a mild cleanser.
  • Moisturize your skin with a non-comedogenic moisturizer.
  • Clean your makeup brushes regularly and avoid sharing them with others.
  • Avoid touching your face unless you’ve just washed your hands.
  • Do not pick or squeeze pimples.
  • Eat a healthy diet and drink plenty of water.
  • Avoid using greasy or oily hair products.
  • Reduce stress.
